The city is dotted with quite a few palaces constructed by various Maharajas. Built in the Indo-Sarcemic style of architecture by Maharaja Sayajirao III in 1878 AD, Laxmi Vilas Palace is among the most magnificent palaces in India. It faces west to the Vishwamitri river. The interiors also have a classic potpourri of antique chandeliers, fountains, silver trophies, magnificent statues and a gallery with busts of former rulers cast in bronze.
